Week 8 Breakdown: Game by Game

Heads up: This is an early-week write-up. Projections change as new news comes out, so check the projections page for the latest numbers.

My early-week look at the Week 8 slate, one game at a time. More games get added as the week goes on.

Panthers (3-3) @ Packers (4-3)

Thu Oct 29 · 7:15 PM CTLambeau Field

This one should be close.

Both of these teams are coming off complete duds. Carolina got run over at home by the Bucs, 43-13. Green Bay dropped a 20-17 game in Detroit. It's a short week, so somebody bounces back on Thursday night, and I'm leaning toward Carolina.

Game overview

Carolina (3-3): This one was ugly. Bryce Young went 14 of 27 for 163 yards with 1 TD and 2 INTs, and Carolina lost a fumble on a sack too. Kenny Pickett finished the game. Tampa ran it 49 times for 258 yards and three scores, and that's a real concern for this defense. Carolina only threw 31 passes (36 dropbacks counting 5 sacks). They turned it over and forgot they have two stud wide receivers. The run game hasn't been much of a weapon (18 carries for 88 yards last week), and Chuba Hubbard got only 7 carries because the game got away from them early.

Green Bay (4-3): Detroit torched this secondary through the air. Lions QBs went 22 of 32 for 303 yards and 2 TDs. That's the spot I want Carolina's passing game in. On the other side, Jordan Love threw 45 times (27 completions, 274 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT), and Josh Jacobs is back. He made his season debut last week with 11 carries for 36 yards plus 5 catches for 55 yards and a TD on 7 targets (16 touches), and he's carrying no injury designation for Thursday.

Injury notes (Monday practice report; both teams only held walkthroughs, so these are estimates):

Coaching matchup

Dave Canales (CAR) vs. Matt LaFleur (GB). Carolina's coordinators are Brad Idzik (offensive coordinator) and Ejiro Evero (defense); Green Bay runs Adam Stenavich (offense) and Jonathan Gannon (defense). Ejiro Evero's Carolina defenses have allowed 23.0 points per game in two meetings with LaFleur, and Jonathan Gannon is in his first year running Green Bay's defense. Last time these two met, Carolina won 16-13 at Lambeau on Nov. 2, 2025.

Game script

With Jacobs back, I think we need to temper expectations for this high-powered Green Bay passing attack going forward. Matthew Golden and Christian Watson can still have big games, but this offense should be better balanced. It's a short week at home, and Jacobs should be able to handle the load again.

Fair warning: that "more balanced" view rests on one game. Green Bay is still a pass-first, motion-heavy offense this year: about a 64% pass rate in neutral situations, motion on about 63% of plays, and play action around 20%. So I'm treating Jacobs as near his full role, not a big boost on top of trimming the receivers.

For Carolina, I expect them to get back to throwing to their two best players. If Green Bay grinds it out with Jacobs and Carolina has to keep pace, Young and his receivers get the volume. I like Carolina's passing game here. One tiebreaker: Green Bay sends five or more rushers on about 34% of dropbacks, and heavy pressure looks can open quick shots for Young's receivers.

Target pecking order (season target share)

Carolina 1. Tetairoa McMillan (WR): 25.6% (54 targets in 6 games). Week 7: 4-40 on 6 targets 2. Jalen Coker (WR): about 23% in the 5 games he's played (39 targets). Week 7: 1-9 on 4 targets 3. Darren Waller (TE): 10.9%. Week 7: 1-50-1 on 2 targets 4. Tommy Tremble (TE): 10.0% 5. Chuba Hubbard (RB): 8.5%, plus 96 carries

Green Bay 1. Matthew Golden (WR): 26.2% (69 targets in 7 games). Week 7: 6-39 on 12 targets 2. Christian Watson (WR): 21.3% (56 targets). Week 7: 5-57 on 8 targets 3. Tucker Kraft (TE): 16.3%. Week 7: 4-48-1 on 6 targets 4. Josh Jacobs (RB): 7 targets in his first game back

Showdown angle

If you're with me on Carolina, McMillan or Young at captain with Jacobs as the run-back. Jacobs also works at captain if Green Bay wins this on the ground. Hubbard works as a captain or flex with a steady floor, since Carolina's run defense is the weakest unit on either side. For cheap darts, Trevor Etienne and the Panthers DST (facing a first-time starting center and a banged-up Green Bay line) fit the Carolina read. And if Carolina keeps turning it over like last week, the Packers DST is in play.

These are my early thoughts on Thursday. I'll update after injury reports.
